- What is it? — A publication dedicated entirely to fictional stories set in the reality of Second Life.
- Do stories have to be set in SL? — Stories can involve RL, as long as they contain a passage that's set in SL or deals explicitly with SL in a similarly vivid fashion.
- Why SL? — SL is a full-fledged world of its own, and fiction is a worldly thing. SL provides the setting for both traditional stories and a subgenre of its own. There are certain things that are possible in SL, but impossible in RL. And – there are things that are possible in both... but if you write your story based on a location in SL, readers from all over the world will get to see your setting as you saw it.
- What medium will the magazine be in? — sLiterary will be published both inworld in SL as well as on this site.
- May I submit in a language other than English? — We currently do not accept submissions in other languages. Non-English phrases may be used in context of your story, but we will not accept stories written completely in a language other than English.
- Who may submit? — sLiterary has an open submission policy, so anyone with a SL-related self-contained story to tell can submit.
- When will the magazine be published? — sLiterary is a biannual publication. A new issue will be released on the second Monday of March and September. (For 2008, the Spring issue will come out on the second Monday of April.)
- When is the next deadline? —
Sept 18, 11:59 SLT (PST) Extended!
However, we suggest that you do not wait until the last moment to submit. In many cases, we may suggest changes to your story, which we expect you to make by this deadline if your story is to be considered for publication for the quarter. - What length submissions do you accept? — Stories of all length will be considered, even novels -- though, those will probably be serialized. (For those, we ask that the author submits the usual query letter, summary, and first three "chapters" to be serialized.)
- What name should I submit under? — Authors are encouraged to use their SL name. "For fun," some established authors might want to completely disassociate their RL name from their SL "pen name", to perhaps get to start over on a different tangent.
- Do you accept poetry? — Yes, stories of all forms will be accepted.
- Will writers be paid? — For prose, expect payment from L$1 - L$10/word, depending on length and quality. Poetry, from L$100 and up.
- Do you have any suggestions for new writers? —
- Write what you believe is good, and submit only something you have thoroughly edited.
- We tend to develop dislikes towards writers who disrespect us by sending pieces they haven't bothered to read over several times themselves. (Editors are people, too!)
- We like works like Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. However, we hate submissions filled with unintentional grammatical mistakes.
- Rights? — Authors retain all rights and copyright to their works. We request one-time, non-exclusive rights to print your writings in a magazine distributed both inworld in SL and on this website.
- How do I submit? — Please email your story as plain text in the body of the email – not as an attachment – to:
story@sliterary.com Submission Checklist - Indicate whether your piece has been previously published. Where, if so.
- Provide a rough word count.
- Please make sure to edit your piece so that it is formatted properly in plain text form.
- When should I expect word after submission? — Generally, within a month. Novels (query, summary, first 3 chapters) may take up to three months.
